Kojic acid

Kojic acid is sometimes used in health and beauty products to lighten the skin. It may be used to treat skin conditions, such as sun damage, scars, and age spots.

The science behind how kojic acid works as a lightening agent involves its effect on melanin production.

Melanin is a naturally occurring pigment in the body that gives the eyes, hair, and skin their color. An amino acid called tyrosine is needed to support the production of melanin.

Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is used in cosmetics as an antioxidant, fragrance ingredient and oxidizing agent in hair dyes.  Hydroquinone may also be used as a stabilizer that inhibits the polymerization of the adhesive in artificial nails. Skin bleaching agent used to lighten areas of darkened skin.

Lactic acid

Lactic acid is a natural acid derived from milk, fruit, vegetables and other plants. It's found in over-the-counter skin care products used for anti-aging, and is also used in chemical peels. With a reputation for being gentler and less irritating than glycolic acid, it also hydrates, increases natural barrier lipids in the outer layer of skin, and lightens and brightens the look of skin for those with discoloration.

Petrolatum

In cosmetics and personal care products, petrolatum is used in the formulation of a variety of product types, including bath products, cleansing products, skin care products, makeup, shampoos, permanent waves, hair conditioners, shaving products, and suntan products.  As an OTC drug petrolatum, it can also be used to temporarily protect injured or exposed skin from harmful or annoying external sources that cause rashes and scratches while also providing relief to the skin. Furthermore, petrolatum slows the transepidermal water loss (TEWL) from the skin by forming a barrier on the skin's surface.  It enhances the appearance and feel of hair, by increasing hair body, suppleness, or sheen, or by improving the texture of hair that has been damaged physically or by chemical treatment.

Glycerin

Glycerin is a well-known humectant that prevents the premature loss of moisture from cosmetics and personal care products so they don’t dry out. Other functions that have been reported for glycerin include, hair conditioning agent, oral care agent, skin conditioning agent—skin protectant and viscosity decreasing agent.
